The Barriers to Entry Are Rising For New FAO Suppliers: As recently as January 2006 the barriers to entry for new Finance and Accounting Outsourcing (FAO) suppliers were low. But that was then and this is now. The BPO industry changes rapidly and windows of opportunity tend to be short lived. According to Paul Nowacki and Saurabh Gupta, the barriers to entry are rising due to four developments.

HCL’s Anant Gupta has written a book to answer that question. HCL self-published The Blackbook, a primer on how Remote Infrastructure Management Outsourcing (RIMO) is shaping up. Today buyers can outsource up to 85 percent of their infrastructure remotely.

Brewing Up IT Success: Outsource Your Network Globally: InBev, which brews 204 brands of beer including four global brands--Stella Artois, Beck’s, Leffe, and Brahma--had specific criteria for its network supplier. It needed someone willing to work together to open new markets like China and Russia. It also wanted someone who could work with its ASP and infrastructure provider. BT fit the bill.

Allied Irish Bank Becomes First Financial Institution in Europe to Outsource Global Trade Processing End-to-End: The bank’s software provider announced it would no longer support its banking application. AIB had to determine whether to outsource or purchase a new system. Outsourcing was more expensive until ABN AMRO opened an office in India reducing fees by 60 percent. Outsourcing today does much more than save money.

Outsourcing Keeps Washington 211's Far-Flung Network in Contact With Its Citizens: Washington’s 211 phone system can rapidly scale up in a disaster, then back during normal times. If one of the call centers is down because of an emergency situation, the system automatically routes the caller to the next available person, even if at a different regional center. None of this was possible without outsourcing.
