outsourcing industry relationships As the outsourcing industry grows, it also is stretching and bending and reshaping itself into the vehicle that will serve the promise of tomorrow. The InfoServer Editor's Choice Awards this year spotlight six relationships that capture the spirit on which the successes of the future will be built.

Each year, we ask suppliers and analysts to nominate relationships they consider to have excelled in certain categories. Then we research those nominees, beginning with an in-depth interview with each supplier. Based on that research, we identify our finalists. The final step in a painstaking process is interviewing the customers to ensure that we are looking at the relationships from all sides. Although relationships can change over time, these six met our criteria at the time of the interview, in terms of general interest and achievement.

You may note a change in the way we've presented the awards this year. Last year, we included both the awards and the projections of industry leaders in the same issue. This year, we decided each topic warranted an issue of its own. Last month, the suppliers and analysts presented their state-of-the-industry reports. This month is devoted exclusively to the award recipients, a move that has enabled us to paint for you a more complete picture of these relationships.

Why Awards?

Why have we established these awards? First, we feel that notable achievements by customers and suppliers should be recognized. Our reasons, however, go deeper than a surface, 'feel-good' exercise. We want to provide you, our readers, with positive role models, examples of success that you can use as learning tools for your own outsourcing endeavors. That goal is at the heart of everything we do at InfoServer. We are focused on learning, on creating a tradition of communicating the elements of success.

With the recent establishment of a board of directors, we have, in fact, taken another step to ensure that we stay focused on those goals. These board members will not only help us maintain our focus, they also deepen our combined knowledge of the industry. Together, they represent the three voices of InfoServer -- the supplier, customer and analyst.

We welcome Wendell Jones, Digital Equipment Corporation;Michael Corbett, Corbett and Associates; Dean Davison, Meta Group; Barry Weigler, Sourcing Interests Group, and Joe Vales, Price Waterhouse. We look forward to their assistance in building an even better publication for the industry.

One of the steps we've taken to add more value to InfoServer is the inclusion of a page dedicated to significant happenings around outsourcing. This information, we feel, will get you plugged into the right kind of conferences and other events that can be of benefit. We may be adding book reviews and other information. We'd like to receive input from our readers on what you'd like to see in that section.

Our eye, as always, is on tomorrow. The Editor's Choice Awards are one reflection of that focus. Individually, the awards salute relationships that have distinguished themselves in a specific area or accomplishment. As a whole, they serve as a map to the future of this industry we call outsourcing.
